| OXFORD, England -- Most of the early British comments on the papal letter were marked by an attempt to clutch at straws. Theologians insisted that "infallibility" is not involved. Canon 749 [section]3 says that "no doctrine is to be understood as infallibly defined unless this is manifestly demonstrated." A mere letter to bishops does not meet this condition. The pope does not say he is putting forward this teaching "as chief shepherd and teacher of all Christ\s faithful," as Canon 749 [section]1 requires. So there is a tiny gap there. Cardinal Basil Hume, archbishop of Westminster, said: "Although this is not an infallible statement as such, it is nonetheless an authoritative confirmation by the pope of the position held by the church on priestly ordination since the time of Christ." Other theologians point out, however, that although the formal conditions for infallibility are not given, the dominant "Roman school" does not require them. A Vatican "note" explains that "it is not a question of a new dogmatic formulation but of a doctrine taught by the ordinary magisterium in a definitive way." In any case, the language of the letter echoes the language of Canon 749 [section]1 when it says: "In virtue of my ministry in confirming the faith of the brethren I declare ... this judgment to be definitively held by all the church\s faithful." The only way to oppose this is to attack the presuppositions of the Roman school. Hans Kung did this in his 1970 book, Infallible? An Inquiry. So Kung feels free to declare the letter "a disastrous mistake." It is, he claims, the same mistake made in Humanae Vitae in 1968, which was partly motivated by the need to reject the 1931 Lambeth Conference\s cautious acceptance of birth control. In this theology, to accept women priests now would be to admit, once again, that "the Holy Spirit was with the Anglican Communion and not with the Catholic church." In both cases the effect is "that the church\s teaching authority has become more and more incredible, something deeply to be deplored." But bishops and pastors, embedded within the Roman system, having taken an oath on the profession of faith, cannot take this radical option. The best they can hope to do is to engage in damage limitation. Hume points to the passage in the letter that says that "the presence and role of women in the life and mission of the church, although not linked to the ministerial priesthood, remain absolutely necessary and irreplaceable." He pledges himself "to discover and develop further ways of making the role of women even more effective than it already is." Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, archbishop of Milan, adopts the same approach, but has perceived a loophole. "The pope has said nothing about the ordination of women to the diaconate," he told a Eucharistic Congress in Siena three days after the papal leter, which he accepts as "decisive." He went on: "But I think our real task when faced with this letter is not to provide an exegesis from a theological point of view but to see how, despite the difficulties the letter gives rise to, a path of ecumenical dialogue remains possible, a path in which one can show the presence and mission of women in every field." One way to do this is to rethink the question of the diaconate for women which certainly existed in the early church, especially in the East. It has happened in the past and can happen again, that a document which "closes down one way may lead to a theological and practical rethinking of another, enabling us to overcome certain difficulties and appreciate better the nature and strength of women in the church." Concludes Martini, "I think that a certain space remains open." Just how much space is a matter for conjecture. COPYRIGHT 1994 National Catholic Reporter |

As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of Archbishop Oscar Romero\s death, let\s take a moment to indulge the cynic (maybe within ourselves) who might ask, Why should the life (or death) of the shortest-serving archbishop of one of the smallest countries in the world a quarter century ago matter to us at all? Why should we take time from our busy lives to reflect on a footnote to somebody else\s past? The answer--the reason why I think the mythos of Romero endures and should endure--can be digested into 10 easy components of his legacy that are palpable and urgent to the world. 1) He told the marginalized, "You are important." When I was in San Salvador on March 24, 2000, for the 20th anniversary celebration, a reporter who was roving through the crowd asked me why I cared enough about this man to have flown from Los Angeles to be there, and I told him that, in my childhood, Romero was the first authority figure to address me (indirectly) to say: "You matter; you are important." This encapsulates Romero\s love for the poor and the marginalized exactly. Here was a clergyman who had reached the pinnacle of his career. He had reached the archbishop\s palace and was, as far as anyone could tell, headed straight for a cardinal\s hat. If he had dedicated his energies to diplomats and presidents, to wine and cheese affairs in the house of the papal nuncio, no one would have batted an eye or thought any less of him. Yet he was choosing to spend his time with the mothers of the disappeared, and consoling persecuted peasants. That message--love--might not get you very far in this day and age. But, for an idealistic little boy growing up in the outskirts of San Salvador, it was priceless. 2) He was a Christian martyr. Even though the church has not completed its glacial machinations about the question of Romero\s martyrdom, which is muddied by political considerations and Vatican intrigue, the Christian world sees Romero as one of the premier martyrs of the 20th century, and the delay in his beatification only underscores his martyr\s suffering. Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini of Milan, Italy, was asked to name the three most important cardinals, and he included Romero because, he reasoned, his blood had earned him the scarlet colors of a cardinal. Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, has called him "the most beloved martyr" of the 20th century, and the Anglican church gave him a central position in the western facade of Westminster Abbey. Pope John Paul II himself repeatedly said, "He was a martyr." Tertullian famously declared, "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church," and Romero\s blood is shoring up the church where sex abuse scandals are eating away at its lacy garments. From a theological standpoint, martyrs are given such force that they are even invoked to scare away the devil in the Roman ritual for exorcisms. Martyrs echo and renew the sacrifice of Christ and, for that reason, Romero\s martyrdom is a revelation to our world of modernity. 3) He was a prophet. In his famous poem, "San Romero de America," Brazilian Bishop Pedro Casaldaliga says of Romero: "You knew how to drink from the double chalice of the Altar and of the People, with one single hand, consecrated to service." Casaldaliga encapsulates in that one phrase more than I could say about Romero\s prophetic ministry in an entire book, but I will try to add just a little hue. Prophetic preaching could be defined as preaching that converts the ordinary time of our daily, mundane lives to Gospel time. Cardinal Rodriguez also says that Romero made his church an "Easter church," and this is part of the prophetic process to which I am referring. Romero took the history unfolding around him and used it to preach the same message that is revealed in the Bible. Just like the parables and the psalms, the day\s headlines became the medium by which he preached the Gospel, leaving us mesmerized with the grandiose feeling that God walked right along with us, in our valleys, in our troughs and in our bitter places. That is a prophetic ministry if there ever was one! Romero\s awakening the moral righteousness of the Old Testament was a much-needed challenge to the sleepy, dormant role to which religion had been relegated. 4) His "conversion" makes him a compelling hero. Romero\s biographic profile presents a puzzle to people of conscience, the essence of which is, "Did Romero undergo a Paul on the road to Damascus-style conversion, and if so, what is its meaning for us?" Romero was 60 when he became archbishop of San Salvador in 1977. He had been a conservative, bookish cleric up to that point, and he was chosen, in fact, to quash a church style emerging in Latin America at the time that made the hierarchy squirm. It was a time of military dictatorships in Latin America, and of social movements striving to topple these tyrants, with brutal oppression and civil wars as the reaction. Whether or not the "conversion" model of Romero\s life fits with the salient facts, it makes a compelling narrative that forces us to answer: What would we do? What would we do if it paid to go with the flow, and it could mean your death to do the right thing? It is the stuff that myths are made of, and it is at the heart of this hero\s tale. 5) He gave hope to his people. Romero was a leader in Salvadoran life who rose to the occasion and the exigencies of his time. As a matter of fact, Romero was the only leader in El Salvador\s history who has ever done so. People outside El Salvador don\t appreciate this, but Romero first appeared on the national radar for his powerful eulogies. He had to give quite a few. Six of his own priests were killed during his tenure as archbishop, and he set the tone for their funeral Masses after the assassination of Jesuit Fr. Rutilio Grande a month into his term. Romero canceled all Masses in the archdiocese and led one single Mass that everyone followed on the radio. Thereafter, Romero\s sermon broadcasts became a powerful, transforming phenomenon. People say that you could walk across San Salvador to the cathedral and Romero\s voice would always be within earshot, from radios in people\s homes and in grocery store windows, taxis, buses, and even people sitting outside with little transistor radios. Romero was a voice of consolation, a voice of denunciation, "a voice that cried out in the wilderness" and "the voice of the voiceless." By showing that ministry is a profession of hope, Romero became a model for other pastors. 6) His assassination tainted the dictatorship. When King Henry II ordered the assassination of St. Thomas Becket in 1171, his infamous words ("Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?" came back to haunt him and led to political reforms that culminated in the Magna Carta. Likewise, the assassination of Romero shocked the conscience of the world and revealed that the lambs had fangs: that the governments of Central America were vicious killers who did not hesitate to kill a 62-year-old bishop in a chapel in a cancer hospital presiding over the Eucharist."Old men forget," wrote Shakespeare, "yet all shall be forgot"--especially by revisionists who would try to recast history in rosier colors, but they will have a hard time explaining away or rationalizing the dead archbishop being carried out by nuns; the casket fired on at the funeral; the bullet hole through the archbishop\s portrait nine years later at the scene of the massacre at the University of Central America. The Romero assassination was the last straw for a government accustomed to slaughtering its own people. U.N. Truth Commission, investigations of the Organization of American States, and now a U.S. federal court have all identified the blood on the hands of the killers. 7) He preached a torrent of Gospel truth. Once again, Casaldaliga has said it, in San Salvador in March 2000: Romero announced "the word of God in a raging torrent" ("chorro fuerte" . That is absolutely so, and if you ever doubt it, then take a look at the texts of Romero\s speeches. You don\t even need to understand Spanish to see the sheer volume. He was an indefatigable preacher.Romero was a dynamic orator, speaking about urgent themes with urgent and colorful language, speaking powerfully, from the heart, and with great eloquence and clarity. His outspokenness was a firebrand that streaked the firmament of an increasingly noisy world to focus world attention on an overlooked and neglected corner of the globe, "whose laments rose to heaven each day more tumultuously." 8) He energized ecumenism and solidarity. In order to focus world attention on persecutions and oppression, Romero invited religious figures from abroad to visit El Salvador, engaging and inspiring young missionaries like Jean Donovan and countless others to come to El Salvador to serve. Romero even opened the podium to Protestant ministers (a leap of faith, given his previous stern outlook on the subject), paving the way to the broad community of conscience and solidarity today. 9) He rose in the Salvadoran people. Romero said, "If they kill me, I shall arise in the Salvadoran people." It is hard to talk about the insignificance of a long-dead bishop if he is not really dead. A tribute song by Yolocamba Yta questions, "If you are dead, why haven\t they buried you? If you are dead, why are you screaming in my ear?" Travel around El Salvador and Romero\s image is ubiquitous. Travel around the world and the countless institutions and groups bearing his name proclaim his relevance. 10) He appeals to us to humanize globalization. Finally, even though the conflict that caused Romero to rise to challenge the state of the world he knew is gone, we are faced with a landscape that continues to call for Romero\s message of solidarity and conscience. The globalization of markets, as Bishop Gregorio Rosa of San Salvador likes to say, calls for the globalization of hope, of love and of solidarity. Whether we are talking about Third World debt, enforcing humane labor standards, or the old challenge of simply eradicating hunger and poverty, Romero\s appeal to each of us is even more urgent today than it was when he was here. It is more urgent because he isn\t here to bear the burden, and now we have to do it in his memory. [Carlos X. Colorado is an attorney living in California. | Enigmatic Martini makes bold ecumenical moves. OXFORD, England - Next year in Jerusalem!\ was the cry at the end of an interfaith meeting at the Catholic University of Milan last month. The invitation came from Jerusalem\s Ashkenazy chief rabbi, Israel Meir Lau. Later Rabbi Meir Lau met Pope John Paul II in Rome and invited him, too. But, he reported, "the pope just smiled and said the time of the visit was drawing near.\ His hosts in Milan were more forthcoming. They will be in Jerusalem next year: Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini archbishop of Milan, who wearies of being tipped as John Paul\s successor, and the Rome-based Sant\Egidio Community. The Sant\Egidio Community is a lay organization that grew out of a modest Catholic Worker-type soup kitchen in the dolce vita Rome of the 1970s. Its lay leader is Andrea Riccardi, professor of the history of Christianity in Rome University. Its chaplain is Don Matteo Zuppi, a priest famed throughout Italy for his help to immigrants and AIDS sufferers. Part prayer group, part voluntary organization, it counts 8,000 members in Rome and almost as many in Belgium, San Salvador, Argentina, Mozambique and Lithuania. Among Rome\s homeless were many refugees from the southern Sudan, Somalia and Mozambique. These contacts led Sant\Egidio - named after the ancient church in Rome\s Trastevere quarter where they meet every evening - to broker peace in Mozambique between the Marxist government and Renamo rebels. They brought an end to the civil war through fax messages sent by satellite to the bush. Remarkably, this freelance, unofficial peacemaking succeeded - in great measure because it was unofficial. The business of the Sant\egidio Community, says Riccardi, is dialogue, and dialogue leads to reconciliation. After Martini was named archbishop of Milan in 1980 - an astonishing and unprecedented appointment for a Jesuit - he worked with the homeless cared for by the Sant\Egidio Community. He admitted that as rector of the Biblical Institute and then the Gregorian University he had been cut off from life. He needed this exposure to the underworld of the homeless. That explains why Martini welcomed the Sant\Egidio Community in Milan. He also secured a star attraction, Mikhail Gorbachev, who spoke in Milan\s prestigious opera house, La Scala. Gorbachev\s title was better than his speech: "Religion, Peace and Justice in the New World Disorder.\ And he cut short his stay because of the crisis in Moscow. Less obviously "religious" in the churchgoing sense than his successor, Boris Yeltsin, Gorbachev now admits to being baptized as a child and takes a broad and somewhat lofty view of the importance of religion. His peroration: "The union of politics, science, religion and ethics holds the key to the solution for the future problems of modem man. Only a reasonable, responsible, ethical man can open the way to a peaceful future for humanity.\ Gorbachev had to represent Russia, the Russian Orthodox Church still sulking in its corner. But up on the stage at La Scala sat Martini, flanked by the patriarch of the Syrian Orthodox Church, Zakka Iwas, Rabbi Meir Lau and Habib Belkhodja, a senior Muslim cleric from Saudi Arabia. Transport that group to Jerusalem next year and something dramatic will have been achieved. Back in December 1991, when he was offered Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger\s job at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, his 10-year term having expired, Martini declined. In interviews he declared that if be ever left Milan, it would be to go to Jerusalem where, as a biblical scholar, be hoped to die. Almost as enigmatic as John Paul. | Italian Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, a progressive frequently mentioned as a candidate to be the next pope, has advocated the creation of a "democratic and planetary" system of government that would transcend the powers of presently existing nation-states. Martini\s proposal came in a July issue of the Roman daily newspaper La Repubblica. In an essay on human rights, Martini wrote that nations have the right to manage their own affairs, but in view of the universal nature of human rights, an absolute notion of sovereignty that prevents the international community from policing abuses is "anachronistic and unhistorical." Martini, 73, is the archbishop of Milan. The cardinal supported "humanitarian intervention" in defense of suffering populations such as refugees, including the use of troops when other means have failed. Though "humanitarian intervention" was most recently invoked by NATO in defense of its bombing campaign against Serbia, Martini did not expressly approve or condemn that action. Instead, quoting from Pope John Paul II, Martini said such interventions must be precise in their objectives, must be authorized at a supra-national level, and must never depend on "the mere logic of force." Martini wrote that effective protection of human rights "obviously demands a true reconsideration of the present international order." In his most controversial statement, he said that international tribunals of human rights should have enforcement powers within nation-states. Ultimately, Martini argued, it will be necessary to rethink the concept of the nation "to ensure a more just and true cohabitation" among peoples. This will mean, he said, distinguishing between a "state" and a "nation," so that national identity does not necessarily rest upon the existence of a political entity. "Before national interests, there are individual persons with their inalienable dignity," Martini wrote, "and before the particular interests of individual groups is the universal human community and its obligation to work for justice, solidarity and peace." To that end, Martini wrote, it will be necessary to build a planetary system of government, for which the present European Union is one possible model. Martini called transcending national sovereignty "the roadmap to a more just and stable order." This order, Martini writes, must be based on an "exchange of gifts" in which the well-being of all groups, especially the weak, is protected. "For this it will be necessary to overcome not only waging actual wars, but also cold wars, and not merely to ensure the equality of rights of all people, but also their access to assets for the construction of a better future," Martini wrote in the July 13 La Repubblica. The concept of a planetary political order that would supercede the power of nation-states is anathema to many U.S. political conservatives. "There are people who genuinely believe that our interests are best served if we become weaker and weaker," Republican Congressman Roscoe Bartlett said in 1998, "and the U.N. becomes stronger and stronger, so they ultimately have a bigger army than we do so they can keep the world peace. These people are called globalists, new-world-order, one-world-government people." COPYRIGHT 2000 National Catholic Reporter |

| 30/10/1999 My dreams for the Church An interview with Cardinal Martini Cardinal Martini, the Jesuit Archbishop of Milan, expounded three dreams to the bishops gathered in Rome for the recent Synod for Europe. In an interview with the editor and the Rome correspondent of The Tablet, he developed his vision for the new evangelisation, the parish and the movements, and the college of bishops. CARDINAL Martini is 72, and he goes on thinking. Of all the speeches of the bishops during the second Synod for Europe which has just ended in Rome, none attracted more attention from the media than his. He began it with a tribute to the late Cardinal Hume, with whom he was close friends. Then, like Cardinal Hume in a previous synod speech, he said he had been dreaming; his dreams, like that of Cardinal Hume, concerned signposts for the future. There were three dreams, and in his Tablet interview he said more about each of them. He is fluent in English, precisely enunciated with a strong accent, but switches to Italian for greater facility when his thought is complex. In his cathedral in Milan the cardinal has been developing themes of biblical spirituality to packed congregations, often of young people. His first synod dream was about the Bible, that it should become "the book of the future for the European continent, especially for the young". "The Bible is the book from which we are born as Christians", he told us. "Its a beautiful work from a literary point of view. It appeals to the modern conscience because it speaks through stories and narratives. It therefore has all the characteristics to speak to the people of today." How does he think the Bible relates to the catechism? "Ordinarily I prefer to start from the Scriptures but I recognise that a catechism is necessary because the New Testament itself, every so often, seeks to give an organic synthesis of its message. This effort at synthesis over the centuries has little by little been condensed in the catechism. But I would not entrust myself to the formula that the catechism is the instrument for a new evangelisation. That instrument is the Bible." A biblical spirituality also enables Christians to cross ecumenical bridges. "We have found in the Bible a very broad terrain of understanding with the Churches of the Reformation", he testifies. For dialogue with the Eastern Churches, however, Cardinal Martini recommends a different approach, through the Fathers of the Church and the liturgy. "During these days in the synod, a bishop from a Greek Catholic Church in Eastern Europe said, We give you the icons and you give us the lectio divina. We can help the Eastern Churches with a spirituality that starts from a prayerful reading of the Scriptures, and they give us the icons through which to contemplate the mystery." He turns also to the Bible, he says, because he sees the situation of Christians today as reflecting that of the communities whose story is recounted in the New Testament. Practising Christians are now a minority in society, as in the early centuries. Like them, he explains, "we are faced with an indifferent and partly hostile world. This clarifies our language. We have to make our proposals clear and convincing. Every one of our interventions has to be argued. The only power we now have is that of the Holy Spirit." He stresses that "the whole process of modernity makes the adhesion to Christianity a free personal choice". How does he evaluate modern pluralistic societies, then, which are no longer founded on any sole ideological or religious story? Are they sapped by relativism, or upheld by an absolute respect for neighbour? How does Cardinal Martini judge them? He cuts in, courteously, but his words have a punch. "These societies are very ambiguous. Certainly they have many values: respect for the person, tolerance, the sense of freedom. But they have difficulty in observing fidelity, perseverance in the marriage commitment, and often they are confused about the great absolute values. So there are two sides. But it is not for me to judge society as a whole; we have to meet people face to face to find common ground on which to reflect." There is common ground with unbelievers in concern for human rights, he goes on, and in the beauty of Christian art, architecture and music, but above all in the search for meaning. "As a bishop, I organise meetings with non-believers, letting them speak about their search. People who dont attend church or have abandoned religious practice share this quest for meaning. They want to make sense of their lives and discover the foundation of the moral values in which in some way they believe. As Christians, we should meet them not in the abstract society as described by sociologists but as persons living in that society with many desires, hopes, and expectations as well as scepticism. In this sense we have to find common ground." His second synod dream was about the parish, that it should become a sign of communion and hope for the world, offering a credible alternative to a fragmented society and ethics. But for this to be achieved, he added in his synod speech, the new Catholic movements and communities had to be integrated into the mainstream of the Church. It is well known that Cardinal Martini has always had reservations about these movements, and that in his own diocese his relations with Communion and Liberation in particular, which was born in Milan, have often been strained. Does he really think that his proposal for integration is practical? The many supporters of the movements expect them to continue as independent groupings, just as the religious orders did. He explains. "Paradoxically, the movements as such are made to disappear. They have to bring the values they represent to the centre of the Church; after that their task is done to some extent. Its like the liturgical and biblical movements of 50 years ago: they are not vigorous today because the Church has absorbed their values, which have become the possession of everyone." In the movements he sees "a ferment of ideas and experiences which do not have a precise shape. At a certain point, this divides into two parts: one part is assimilated into the Church, and the other part will constitute itself as a society, as a religious order, and continue as a canonical reality in the Church which should be well defined so that there is no confusion". He compares this trajectory to that of the original Franciscan movement, "at first a great flowering of ideas on poverty and the simple life", which "became also a number of religious orders with a precise canonical form". He reflects: "We need both the one and the other. At present we are in a time of transition, so its a rather difficult moment." Yet it is precisely when movements get to work in a parish, as the cardinal is advising, that friction can be greatest. The Neo-Cat- echumenate is the only one that habitually bases itself in parishes and in England it caused such division in one diocese that the bishop concerned banned it from taking any new initiatives. The cardinal pays tribute to the Neo-Catechumenate: "I admire it very much." He describes the "way" in which it trains its adherents to walk as a "treasure", though he thinks the steps of this way are "a bit too rigorous perhaps". This training goes on for years too long, he says. "I tell the Neo-Catechumenate: you should copy the African missions, which have a catechumenate for two or three years, and then send the catechumens into the parish." The Easter vigil is a particular focus of contention, we suggest. Particularly if the parish priest is himself a member of the Neo-Catechumenate, there are regularly two Masses: one for the general body of the parishioners, and another afterwards for the Neo-Catechumenate, which continues till dawn and ends with feasting on the paschal lamb. What does he think of this double celebration? "I would be ready to accept a Neo-Catechumenate group having their own vigil for two or three years", he replies. "Then the parish can learn from them and make the vigil more vivid. But after that the Neo-Catechumenate should join the parish. What I dont accept is that they should have a special liturgy for years and years." The last of Cardinal Martinis three dreams in his synod speech was widely interpreted as a call for a new council of the Church, though he did not say so explicitly. He listed, for the bishops in the hall, a series of "knotty problems", disciplinary and doctrinal, which had developed over the 40 years since the Second Vatican Council was held: the deepening and development of the councils doctrine of the Church as communion; the lack of ordained ministers; the position of women in society and the Church; the participation of the laity in ministerial responsibilities; sexuality; marriage discipline; penitential practice; relations with the Orthodox Churches, and the need to revive ecumenical hopes; the relationship between democracy and values, and between civil law and the moral law (see The Tablet, 16 October, p. 1409). These challenges, he told the synod, could not be met "by sociological surveys, the collection of signatures, or pressure groups, and perhaps not even by a synod". He envisaged the use of "a more universal and authoritative instrument" to tackle them, "in the full exercise of episcopal collegiality". There was applause in the hall as he ended. He confirmed to us in his Tablet interview that he expected the Church in the next millennium to recover its first-century practice of holding large gatherings periodically. "These could be a council", he told us, "or they could be an enlarged synod of bishops. I am not thinking of new structures." He picked up a phrase he had used in the synod to discuss the Church today. It was "becoming ever more diverse in its languages", he had told the bishops. He now developed his thought to explain why this required meetings of the whole Church. He had just been in Taiwan, and had been struck by the different ways that people there expressed and reasoned about the faith. "Think of the Churches growing in China. They have a way of thinking which is very far from the European way, and we need to listen to them, to have occasions to mix together. "Theology started in the twelfth century as an expression of intelligent reasoning on religious experience, conditioned by an Aristotelian mentality. It is clear that this is not identical with the expression of a Chinese or Japanese or Indonesian mentality, which works with a different background. As the Pope has said many times on his journeys, we have to encourage the people of Asia and elsewhere to express their richness of religious experience in their own terms. But we have also to compare the languages, because we must reach a common understanding. Sometimes the words may be similar, sometimes different, but the most important thing is to know that we are saying the same thing, otherwise the Church will be divided." The comparison of languages is already happening in the synods, but can only be partial, he points out, because their representation is not wide enough. "Out of 260 Italian bishops, eight have attended the second European Synod. So in these gatherings only a few bishops can make this comparison. In the third millennium, therefore, we need to develop our tradition of the collegiality of all bishops. In my speech I was looking ahead, not making a request for the present moment." Which is perhaps just as well. Many people feel that the conditions for any sort of council are simply not in place at present. But Martini is a man of Christian hope, and this is the note on which he concludes, referring to the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus which was a "biblical icon" of this synod. "Hope is a gift of the Spirit", he reflects, "which fills our hearts with the joy and optimism that come from above. The two disciples on the road to Emmaus had lost hope. They did not regain it by being told, You have to hope, but by having the Scriptures explained to them. They came to understand that there was sense in what had happened, an opening, a calling: that what they had thought was a failure was really a victory. And that\s the gift of hope: to be able to see revealed in things, the plan of God." |

Davor bewahre uns, lieber Herre Gott!

Artikel erschienen am Do, 28. April 2005 |

Gerusalemme, 3 aprile 2005 Carlo Maria card. Martini, S.I. |

E fino a quel giorno? |
came back to haunt him and led to political reforms that culminated in the Magna Carta. Likewise, the assassination of Romero shocked the conscience of the world and revealed that the lambs had fangs: that the governments of Central America were vicious killers who did not hesitate to kill a 62-year-old bishop in a chapel in a cancer hospital presiding over the Eucharist.
